What this tool removes

Text copied out of an AI chat often brings things with it that you don't see until it lands somewhere else:

  • Hidden characters. Zero-width spaces, word joiners and similar characters take up no room on screen. They can break spell check, word counts, spreadsheet formulas, code and search.
  • Unusual spaces. Narrow no-break spaces and other look-alike spaces sometimes replace ordinary spaces. They look the same but behave differently, and some apps display them as boxes or odd gaps.
  • Markdown symbols. AI chats format answers with Markdown. Paste into an email, a form or a plain-text field and you get **bold** asterisks and ### pound signs instead of formatting.
  • Citation markers. Answers that use web search can leave behind fragments like 【4:0†source】 or citeturn0search3 when copied.

Your wording isn't changed. Two optional fixes, replacing em dashes and straightening curly quotes, are off until you turn them on.

How to clean AI text

  1. Copy the answer from your AI chat and paste it into the first box.
  2. Check the summary under the boxes to see what was found.
  3. Copy the clean text from the result box.

Does ChatGPT watermark its text?

There's no evidence it does. In April 2025, people noticed some OpenAI models adding narrow no-break spaces to long answers, and the characters were widely described as a watermark. OpenAI said they were not a watermark but an unintended quirk, and users have reported similar stray spaces from later models too.

AI detectors such as GPTZero and Turnitin judge the writing itself, not hidden characters. So cleaning text here fixes formatting problems, but it doesn't change how a detector scores the writing. If you've been asked to write something yourself, this tool won't change that.

No. AI detectors look at writing style, not hidden characters, so removing them doesn't change a detector's result. This tool fixes formatting, not authorship.

Why does my pasted text show asterisks and pound signs?

AI chats write in Markdown, which uses ** for bold and # for headings. Apps that don't understand Markdown show the symbols instead. Turn on Remove Markdown symbols to strip them.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your text isn't uploaded, stored or shared, including with any AI service.
