What gets removed
The tool removes numbering at the very start of a line when it's followed by punctuation, a space or a tab. It recognizes the common styles:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
1. Apples | Apples |
2) Pears | Pears |
[3] Plums | Plums |
#4 Figs | Figs |
1.2 Grapes | Grapes |
Numbers that stay
Numbers that are part of your text are left alone: times like 10:30 meeting, decimals like 3.14 is pi and years like 2026 was busy. If your lines are numbered with just a number and a space, such as code copied with line numbers, turn on Also remove plain numbers followed by a space. Check the result, because that option also removes a year or amount at the start of a line.
Common uses
- Cleaning code copied from a website or PDF that included line numbers
- Turning a numbered list back into plain lines so you can sort or re-number it
- Removing bullets from lists copied out of documents and slides
