Why pasted text gets messy
Text rarely survives copy and paste intact. PDFs end every line with a hard break because they store lines, not paragraphs. Web pages add non-breaking spaces and invisible characters for layout. Word processors swap straight quotes for curly ones. Emails wrap long lines. The result looks almost right but breaks in a document, a spreadsheet or a form.
What the cleaner fixes
- Extra spaces: double spaces, tabs and spaces at line starts and ends.
- Blank lines: long gaps are reduced to one blank line, or removed entirely.
- Broken lines: lines split mid-sentence, like text copied from a PDF, are joined back into paragraphs, including words split with a hyphen.
- Invisible characters: zero-width spaces and similar characters that break searches, formulas and code.
- Odd spaces and quotes: non-breaking spaces become normal spaces, and curly quotes can be straightened.
