How to add line numbers
- Paste your text into the first box, one item per line.
- Choose a starting number and a format.
- Copy the numbered text from the result box.
Options
- Start at any number, so you can continue a list from where another left off.
- Skip blank lines keeps empty lines empty and doesn't give them a number. Turn it off to number every line, which is what code reviews and legal line references expect.
- Pad numbers lines numbers up in a column, either with spaces or with leading zeros, like 01, 02, 03.
- 1 + tab puts a tab after each number, so the numbers land in their own column when pasted into a spreadsheet.
Common uses
- Turning a plain list into a numbered list for an email or chat message
- Adding line references to a transcript, script or contract
- Numbering steps in instructions or recipes
- Preparing code snippets for review
