Remove accents

Convert accented letters to plain ones, so café becomes cafe and Müller becomes Muller.

Options

Your text stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or saved.

How to remove accents

  1. Paste your text into the first box.
  2. Copy the plain-letter version from the result box.

What gets converted

Accents, umlauts, cedillas, tildes and other marks are removed from the letters they sit on: é, è, ê and ë all become e, ç becomes c, and ñ becomes n. Capital letters stay capital.

Some letters aren't a plain letter with a mark added, so they need their own rule. With the extra option on:

LetterBecomesLanguage
ßssGerman
æ, œae, oeDanish, Norwegian, French
øoDanish, Norwegian
łlPolish
þ, ðth, dIcelandic

Text in other writing systems, such as Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese, Korean or Hindi, isn't changed.

Common uses

  • Making URL slugs, user names and file names that work everywhere
  • Matching names in spreadsheets where some have accents and some don't
  • Preparing text for older systems that only accept plain English letters
  • Making search work regardless of how a name was typed

Questions

Is removing accents the right way to write a name?

Only where a system can't handle accents. In normal writing, keep the accents: they're part of the spelling and can change the meaning of a word.

Why does ü become u and not ue?

Removing the mark is the standard approach for slugs and search. German writing sometimes uses ue instead, so check for names where that matters.

Does it work with capital letters?

Yes. É becomes E and Ç becomes C.
